Can Black and Brown Be done with {Class}?

We are currently in the process of purchasing our first home, don't be alarmed we are not moving. We are actually buying the home we have lived in for 4 and 1/2 years and doing some serious renovations to it. The first room we are doing is the Living Room, I had decided I wanted to do the Living Room in brown with PoPs of GREEN for an accent color.

Here's the dilemma: I have always hated when people mix black and brown... CHOOSE ONE PEOPLE, is it black or is it brown!? UGH...I'm talking mixing black and brown clothes, furniture, accessories, whatever it may be...pick OnE!!! Well look what it's come down to, I want a brownish/greenish couch with brownish beigish walls BUT am having serious anxiety attacks at the thought of getting rid of my black furniture and accessories. Some of my all time favorite pieces are;

1) My family Proclamation
This was our wedding gift from my parents and I will AlWaYs treasure it!

2) Allie's Memory Board
I know this can easily be re-done in Sepia Tone but doesn't it look so classy in black and white?

3) My Black Entry Way Table
Jordan made me this table shortly after we were married and I LOVE IT, it Will go to the grave with me :)

So back to my story...yesterday I was looking at couchs online when I came across this cute little couch with all my specifications (L shaped, chaise lounge, brownish/greenish/beigish) but what is that sitting next to it? bLaCk TaBles and *gasp* I like how it looks!

Just imagine that blue throw blanket in a bright vivid green.

So my question to YOU is, can black and brown be done with CLASS? Don't be shy, please tell me what you think, I want to know! Can I still have my brownish/greenish couch and not have to sacrifice my coveted black furniture and accessories?

You don`t have to move. Make sure you aren`t moving to Califonia for 3 years because there can be earth quakes.

I used to be the same way - black or brown and then the model home of our current home mixed black and brown in every room and I fell in love with it. I decided I love it when done well. Most of my house is green, blue, brown and black. These pictures are old - but you can check it out. I love your look.

If you love it, and it makes your house become your home...go for it. Who cares if it was featured in Pottery Barn (or whatever).

Couldn't agree with MaryLee more! Who writes the rules of what you can and can't do? NO ONE! Don't worry about what other's think, do what YOU want. Heck, throw in some zebra print pillows with a leopard rug. It's all good.

And Hayden, good 'ol Hayden. We really do hope you stay for at least 3 more years...

Well, hope it doesn't shock you, but I have black and brown ALL throughout my family room, kitchen and pretty much everywhere! I think its up to you if you could live with it. I actually like my pieces to be different, I like the variety for sure!

I'm pretty sure the legs on that couch are black...so since you can't really do anything about those, I believe that black and brown can definitely inhabit the same living space.

In high school I hated Black and Brown together! I have evidently gotten over it because everywhere in my house is black and brown! I love it now! I think if you like it decorate with it!

You're asking ME?!

Okay, I think it would work. It seems to me like black furniture does work with most colors. But, a brown belt with black shoes is a different story!! :)

I can't even focus on the issue here because I'm so missing Hayden right now!!! So darn cute! Now you know. NOthing else matters because you aren't moving. Let the inter-racial furniture begin! :)

Ilove black and brown together but I tend to go with the more bold, dramatic look. If you like it go for it...

You can totally do it and you need to go see mom and dad's house. Their new couch is similar and yes the legs are also black...I'm pretty sure that is the same table the my parents have with their new set. Mom put brown baskets in it. I don't like black and brown clothes but furniture is good! My couches are the same material and I like the color. It would be good with green pops. GO FOR IT! Harvest Brown is a really good, warm tan.

You are such a dork. But in a good way of course. If you don't like black and brown you better not come to my house. It is mixed together everywhere.

Black and brown can totally go. I did used to believe it was a huge decorating/fashion no no though. I love black furniture, but I love the warmth of earthy tones. Jalen's room has black furniture, brown curtains and tan and brown striped walls...so yeah I think it works. I think I posted some pics on my blog awhile ago of it. Anyways I hope you post pics when you get done remodeling!!! Thats so exciting!

I am glad someone else stresses about dumb things like this. It's not just me. I currently have brown microfiber couches and all black furniture - dining table, console table, and end tables, and black framed pictures. My thought is that as long a like all the woods are the same, the fabrics can be different. And when in doubt, if you really like it, just do it! :)

Your Grandmother would be so proud. I was raised that you never mixed black and brown. As the years went on the rules have softened to the point that it's now a pretty classy thing to do. Realize that some of the most expensive leather jackets you can buy are a combination of black and brown now days.
Trust your judgment little one. I love and miss you, DAD
